Pictures of Paper Prototype
Script for Participants
Step 0: Assume you have downloaded the application and have opened it, you have landed in some page that seems to want you to create a profile, take us through the steps you would follow to do that
Step 1: Demonstrate to us how you would view your calendar
Step 2: Assume you are in a random month, say May 2013. Could you navigate to the "Year View", just to get a perspective?
Step 3: Go back to today, stepping through the month and week.
Step 4: Can you view Leia's calendar?
Step 5: Why don't you request permission to view her calendar?
Step 6: View Chewy's Calendar
Step 7: Compare Chewy's Calendar to yours
Step 8: Why don't we find out if Chewy and you are free to catch up on some Football at 8pm today?
Step 9: Create an event, inviting Chewy to join you with a desired visibility option
Observations and Results from Simple Usability tests:
The Tasks we set could be broadly classified into these three subparts:
Task #2: Create an Event (moderate)
Task #3: Compare Two Calendars (complex)
Observations:
Participant #1
Task #1:
Inquired about a pop-up keyboard
Noted that there was no separation for the first and last name, as well as no restrictions on the username and password
Task #2
N/A
Task #3
Didn't see message showing that Leia's calendar wasn't shared
Expression lit up and said "Ahh!" when the two calendars appeared next to each other
Liked the scrolling to view different friends
Participant #2
Task #1
Noted that there were no password limitations
Task #2
Questioned what invite meant
When selecting "Friends" from the Viewed By pop-up, does it share the calendar with the invited friends or all friends?
Task #3
Tried to use the home icon to navigate to the yearly view
Gave a positive head nod when the two calendars displayed
Participant #3
Task #1
N/A
Task #2
Understood functionality but felt that it was limited due to it being a paper prototype
Task #3
Wondered if the mood feature was optional or required
Could not figure out how to request to have Leia's calendar shared
Struggled with comparing the user's calendar to Chewy's
Assumed the comparison would take place immediately after holding and selecting the two calendars; didn't think to use the "compare" button
Participant #4
Task #1
Needed a keyboard pop-up
Unfamiliar with push notification terminology
Task #2
Thought that the time and date should automatically be filled in if the event is created from the calendar
The person with whom the event is with should automatically receive push notifications about the event
Task #3
Drawn to the moods, but felt that there weren't enough of them; there should be a scroll feature to show more moods
Correctly reached the year view by clicking on the center date ("May 2013")
In order to request Leia's calendar, the participant thought it would be feasible to long press Leia's picture, and a dialog box should pop up
Missed the notification saying the calendar wasn't shared
Did not pay attention to the instructions "Press and hold to compare" until the context was there
Distracted by side buttons
Thought the calendar feature was good for close knit groups or the communities
Participant #5
Task #1
Noted they'd probably not use their primary email just in case they may not like the system
Didn't want to initially select push notifications because they were unsure if they would like the system
Task #2
N/A
Task #3
Liked the month view
Navigated to the year view correctly
Didn't expect to navigate to week at a glance; wasn't devastated because the participant wouldn't normally use it anyway
Clicked the new event icon when trying to compare
Thought the expectations and understanding correlated to existing applications; sense of familiarity
Would like to see if the app could link to other calendars
Interested in seeing the hi-fi prototype
Overall
Didn't want push notifications (Task #1)
Hard to navigate to the year view of the calendar (Task #3)
No discernible way to view the week at a glance (Task #3)
Need for "Exit", "Done," "Cancel," and "Back" buttons
System Usability Scale (SUS) survey
Of the five participants who participated in the low fidelity paper prototype usability test, 100% completed a System Usability Scale (SUS) survey. The results are as follows:
Participant 1: 75
Participant 2: 90
Participant 3: 77.5
Participant 4: 67.5
Participant 5: 70
For a mean of: 76 out of 100
Each item's score contribution ranged from 0 to 4. For items 1,3,5,7,and 9 the score contribution is the
scale position minus 1. For items 2,4,6,8 and 10, the contribution is 5 minus the scale
position. The sum of the scores was multiplied by 2.5 to obtain the overall value of SU.
Sample of SUS survey used during usability testing on 10/17/2013.
Decisions for Next Iteration:
Suggested improvements for the next iteration
- Sign up page needs to be specific
- Sign up page should have a 'Signup' button instead of 'Login"
- Push notification option...needed?
- Calender navigation needs to be more intuitive .
- Friends can be organized into different groups (as in Google circles) for easy navigation
- Access to Home page from all the other sub pages
- Inclusion of back button in all the pages
- making selection of calenders for comparison more inherent and making the changes visible
- A person should be directly invited for an event if the event was created after comparing his/her calender. Similarly auto-filling the date and time if event created after clicking on calender.
- Need to think about the privacy issues involved with comparing calenders
- settings menu
- find a better way to request viewing of a calender that has not been shared
- decide on default calender view
- option to create groups and add members
